Book nowNorthern Lights
The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are nature’s ultimate celestial laser show. They happen when charged solar winds slam into Earth's magnetic atmosphere and light up the dark.
Because Iceland is sitting pretty right under the auroral oval, it is the absolute best spot on Earth to watch the lights dance. When the "Green Lady" starts her performance, she paints the sky in brilliant ripples of neon green, purple, and magenta, casting a magical glow over our mossy lava fields, dramatic mountains, and black sand beaches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our official aurora hunting season runs from late September to mid-April.
- The Winter Months (Nov–Feb): You get massive windows of pure darkness—up to 20 hours a night! The only trade-off is that old man winter can throw heavy clouds and blizzards our way.
- The Equinoxes (Sept–Oct & March): These are a Troll favorite. The weather is a bit friendlier, the roads are easier to drive, and a unique magnetic trick of the Earth around the equinoxes actually triggers stronger solar reactions. That means extra vibrant displays!
- The Summer Note: You cannot see the lights from May to early August. The Midnight Sun keeps the sky completely bright 24 hours a day, so the lights have nowhere to hide.
While the cosmic show can start the second dusk settles, our sweet spot for hunting is usually between 9:00 PM and 2:00 AM, with the most intense activity usually spiking right around midnight.
To catch a mind-blowing show, you need three ingredients:
- Total Darkness: You want to escape the artificial glow of city lights.
- Clear Skies: Clouds are the ultimate party poopers. If it’s entirely overcast, they block the show entirely.
- Solar Activity: This is measured on the Kp Index from 0 to 9. A Kp index of 3 or higher means the sky is primed for a dance!
- You need to wear warm clothes and shoes. Have a warm beanie, mittens and scarf with you.
- It is optional but recommended to bring snacks and water with you.
- We also recommend having a tripod to get more stable photos (for a phone or camera).
