This tour offers a scenic journey into the volcanic Highlands, led by an experienced guide. Highlights include visiting the captivating Ljótipollur Crater Lake, known for its turquoise water and vibrant red volcanic hills. You will also attempt an ascent to the active Hekla Volcano (weather permitting) for a 100-kilometer panoramic view that may reveal up to seven glaciers. The trip provides ample opportunities for invigorating hiking (up to 8 km) and the chance to relax in the area’s natural geothermal pool.
Join this guided excursion into the Icelandic Highlands, designed for travelers seeking dramatic volcanic scenery and active exploration. The entire journey is flexible, catering to guest abilities; while several hiking stops are scheduled, participation in the activity is optional.
The tour includes a drive through majestic mountain landscapes to the first major stop: Ljótipollur Crater Lake. This location, featuring an explosion crater filled with turquoise water and surrounded by slopes colored vibrant red due to mineral deposits, is a highlight for photographers.
Next, you will travel toward the base of Hekla Volcano, often called the "Queen of Icelandic Volcanoes." When conditions permit, the tour ascends to approximately 900 meters. This elevated viewpoint offers a commanding panoramic view spanning 100 kilometers (approximately 62 miles), often including glimpses of surrounding glaciers. Throughout the day, stops are made for hiking opportunities, covering an approximate total distance of 8 kilometers (about 5 miles) on trails that feature uneven terrain and moderate uphill sections. At the geothermal pool, guests have the choice to relax in the warm water or continue hiking. The guide will provide information before each stop, ensuring participants can choose the best activity for their fitness level.
