Katla Ice Cave Extended 4-hour Super Jeep Tour

Extended Ice Cave Tour
All Year Round Activity
Unseen Iceland

Tour Description

Step aboard the Katla Ice Cave Extended Tour, a 4-hour journey offering a more immersive experience beneath the Katla Volcano. Highlights include an extended glacier hike to seek out secret glacier canyons and hidden waterfalls, providing extra opportunities for unique photographs. You will enter the majestic Katla Ice Cave, walking through winding tunnels and glittering ice chambers. The tour is powered by a thrilling 4x4 Super-Jeep ride through a remote, cinematic landscape, giving you a deep insight into the dramatic "dance of fire and ice."

This adventure is an enhanced version of the standard tour, specifically designed for explorers and photographers who desire a longer, uncrowded experience in the Mýrdalsjökull glacier's outlets. It requires a good fitness level due to the extended hike.

Why Choose the Extended Tour? Choose this 4-hour option to go further off the beaten path. It provides extra time on the glacier, access to areas like hidden canyons and waterfalls not seen on the standard tour, and a more detailed geological insight from your expert guide.

Practical Information: Your journey begins at the Troll Expeditions Katla Ice Cave Meeting Point in Vík (right next to The Vík Inn lobby). This meeting point is convenient and offers free parking. Please arrive 20 minutes before departure. Your highly qualified English-speaking guide will check you in and assist with any pre-booked rental gear (helmets, headlamps, crampons are always provided).

You will board a specialized Super-Jeep for a 40-minute ride (duration depends on conditions) through the black volcanic outwash plains. Your guide will share facts about Katla's volcano history and the unique geology. Upon arrival, you will hike for about 20 minutes across the dramatic black desert to the glacier edge.

The core of the experience is the extended glacier trek. After an initial safety briefing and gear check, your guide will lead you through a secure path to the main attraction: the Katla Ice Cave. Unlike the shorter tour, you will then spend additional time exploring the surrounding glacier, seeking out hidden features and unique photographic spots before hiking back and enjoying a relaxing Super-Jeep ride back to Vík.

  • The weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. For tours during winter, warm clothing as the first layer, a waterproof outdoor jacket and pants, hiking boots with high ankle protection, a hat and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket and pants is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for outdoor trips as they become very heavy and cold when they get wet.

  • We highly recommend that you arrive at our meeting point 20 minutes before the departure time stated on your ticket. Please note that if you arrive after departure time, your place on the tour cannot be guaranteed or refunded.

  • Katla Ice Cave Tour: This tour is more physically demanding, as it includes both a bumpy jeep ride and a moderate hike to reach the cave. If you’re pregnant, especially nearing the 6-month mark, please carefully assess your physical condition before booking.
