This adventure is an enhanced version of the standard tour, specifically designed for explorers and photographers who desire a longer, uncrowded experience in the Mýrdalsjökull glacier's outlets. It requires a good fitness level due to the extended hike.
Why Choose the Extended Tour? Choose this 4-hour option to go further off the beaten path. It provides extra time on the glacier, access to areas like hidden canyons and waterfalls not seen on the standard tour, and a more detailed geological insight from your expert guide.
Practical Information: Your journey begins at the Troll Expeditions Katla Ice Cave Meeting Point in Vík (right next to The Vík Inn lobby). This meeting point is convenient and offers free parking. Please arrive 20 minutes before departure. Your highly qualified English-speaking guide will check you in and assist with any pre-booked rental gear (helmets, headlamps, crampons are always provided).
You will board a specialized Super-Jeep for a 40-minute ride (duration depends on conditions) through the black volcanic outwash plains. Your guide will share facts about Katla's volcano history and the unique geology. Upon arrival, you will hike for about 20 minutes across the dramatic black desert to the glacier edge.
The core of the experience is the extended glacier trek. After an initial safety briefing and gear check, your guide will lead you through a secure path to the main attraction: the Katla Ice Cave. Unlike the shorter tour, you will then spend additional time exploring the surrounding glacier, seeking out hidden features and unique photographic spots before hiking back and enjoying a relaxing Super-Jeep ride back to Vík.
