Lava Show - Reykjavík
Tour Description
Witness the raw power of a volcanic eruption in a safe, controlled indoor environment. Highlights include seeing real lava heated to 1,100°C poured right before you, interactive geological education from expert hosts, and a full sensory experience of heat and light. Choose between the Reykjavík harbor location or the seaside village of Vík on the South Coast. Premium upgrades are available, offering balcony seating, a behind-the-scenes furnace tour, and a souvenir piece of lava.
LAVA SHOW offers a practical way to witness the volcanic forces that shaped Iceland without the risks of an active eruption site. This attraction is available in two locations: the Grandi Harbor District in Reykjavík (near the city center) and the village of Vík (approximately 2.5 hours from the capital, near the famous Black Sand Beach).
The experience takes place in a custom-built showroom where real basaltic lava is superheated until molten and then poured into the room. During the 50 to 60-minute demonstration, you will see the lava glow, hear it crackle, and feel the intense heat radiating from the flow. Expert hosts provide a factual narrative, explaining the science of Icelandic geology and the history of local volcanoes like Katla and Eyjafjallajökull.
This is an indoor activity, making it a reliable option for all weather conditions. It is designed for guests of all ages, and safety goggles are provided to those sitting on the ground floor. Both locations are wheelchair accessible and offer free on-site parking, a café, and a gift shop.
For those seeking a more detailed look, the Premium Experience in Reykjavík provides access to a VIP lounge, front-row balcony seating, and a guided tour of the furnace where the lava is melted. Whether you are staying in the city or road-tripping along the South Coast Ring Road, the show provides a clear and educational understanding of how liquid rock transforms the Icelandic landscape.
