Horse Riding & Hot Springs
Tour Description
This horseback riding tour offers a practical and scenic introduction to Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, starting just a 40-minute drive from Reykjavik in the town of Hveragerði. You will mount an Icelandic horse—a unique breed known for its calm demeanor and smooth gaits—and follow well-maintained riding trails up the slopes of Reykjafjall mountain. The route passes through a local green forest, a unique feature in Iceland's typically treeless landscape.
As you ascend the volcanic hills, you will overlook the geothermal area located directly above Hveragerði. This region expanded significantly after a major earthquake in 2008 and remains an active, constantly changing landscape of steam vents and colorful mineral deposits. The trail provides excellent vantage points of the Hengill volcano and the Varmá river, which stays warm year-round due to the influx of natural geothermal water. You will also look out over the wide plains of the southern lowlands. This tour is suitable for participants looking to experience Iceland's geothermal activity from a unique perspective. Please note that this specific itinerary is for riding only and does not include bathing in the hot springs.
