Tour Description
This highly popular adventure offers an intensive exploration of Þórsmörk Nature Reserve (Valley of Thor), nestled between the glaciers Mýrdalsjökull, Tindfjallajökull, and Eyjafjallajökull. Highlights include a thrilling, adventurous drive across multiple unbridged glacial rivers in a specialized 4x4 Super Jeep. You will ascend to Gígjökull glacier to witness the visible aftermath of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption and enjoy breathtaking panoramic vistas of Þórsmörk and the highlands during the hike. The tour provides flexibility with hiking options, allowing you to choose your level of physical activity.
Join this guided Super Jeep tour for an unforgettable journey into Þórsmörk, a stunning and unique nature reserve located deep in South Iceland. This valley, known for its dramatic contrasts of lush birch forests and rugged volcanic terrain, is generally inaccessible without a specialized vehicle.
The adventure itself begins with the drive: you will be transported in a highly capable 4x4 Super Jeep, specially designed to handle the rough mountain roads and safely navigate the numerous unbridged glacial rivers that carve the landscape. This river crossing is a major highlight and a thrilling part of the experience.
Once in the valley, you will have the opportunity to engage in several stops for hiking. The guide will lead an ascent to Gígjökull glacier, an outlet of Eyjafjallajökull, where you can see the profound changes caused by the 2010 eruption. From this point and along the hiking routes, you will be rewarded with awe-inspiring vistas over the entire valley, the surrounding glaciers, and the wider highlands. Note that the terrain can be uneven, involving uphill and downhill sections. Crucially, the tour is tailored to the group’s capabilities, and all hiking segments are optional; guests who prefer not to hike can relax and enjoy the scenery near the stops. This experience provides an ideal opportunity to witness the raw, unique ambiance of the Icelandic nature.
