Our Story

Once upon a time in 2016, a spark of adventure ignited the birth of Tröll Expeditions.
Thanks to our founder's adventurous spirit, we started off with just one tour - the South Coast Glacier Hike.
But boy, did it catch on like wildfire! Before we knew it, we were adding more day tours to our catalog faster than a puffin can flap its wings!

In the blink of an eye 2017 came: we were running daily Snæfellsnes and Golden Circle day tours, in addition to our South Coast tour. These tours have since become as essential to an Iceland visit as a warm lopapeysa (that's a traditional Icelandic sweater, for those not in the know)!

In the same year, we decided to up the ante and ventured into Multi-Day tours to the Glacier Lagoon. We conducted Glacier Hikes and visited an Ice Cave in the far South.But we thought, "Why stop there?".
So, we established our own glacier department to put the FUN and soarkle back into glacier hikes. Today, we're out there on Falljökull and Sólheimajökull every single day of the year, with a team of 40 dedicated glacier enthusiasts.

We're not just blowing hot air when we say we're the highest-rated tour operator on the glaciers in Iceland, both in terms of 5-star reviews and total reviews. Our meeting points for glacier hikes are now the best in Iceland, and we're always looking for ways to make your experience even better. After all, we're all about professionalism, safety, and most importantly, FUN!

Our unique approach of making tours fun and informative turned out to be a bigger hit than a Viking feast! This success gave us the boost to expand even further. When one of our partners, who was conducting snorkeling tours in Silfra, decided to hang up their fins, we were ready to dive in. We took over what was then a 2-person team, and now we have a squad of 20 full-time employees making a splash in the Silfra snorkel department, conducting quality tours each day.

In 2018, our Tröll family had grown to about 10 employees, all working from our cozy office in Reykjavik. During one memorable meeting, an employee voiced concerns about the quality of Ice Cave tours being offered. Our operations manager, ever the passionate adventurer, stood up and declared, “NOT ON MY WATCH!” And just like that, we were off to purchase 9 giant vehicles that could take you anywhere, on and off a glacier. Staying true to our core values of fun and professionalism, we are now the only tour operator in Iceland that offers Ice Cave tours in three different locations: Falljökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Breiðamerkurjökull. Yes, these names might seem like a mouthful now, but trust me, you'll have them down pat by the time you finish one of our tours!

Best part is that we didn't stop there. We knew that our adventurous travelers craved more, so we began packaging our day tours and activities into bigger adventures, aptly named “Multi-Day tours.” This new offering attracted a different kind of traveler, those who preferred to let us handle the logistics and hotel bookings, leaving them free to focus on capturing that perfect Icelandic photo (don't worry, your guide will tell you where to snap it!). Starting with 2-3-4-5 day tours, we quickly expanded to offer tours around the country, which are 6 or 8 days long, with hotels, breakfast, and most activities included.

Fast forward to 2020-2021, Tröll decided to invest in the future. We secured better meeting points for both our Katla Ice Cave tour and our Skaftafell Glacier hikes. Not only that, but we also ordered 20 new sprinters in 2021, which we received in 2022. These new Mercedes-Benz minibusses are the best in the business, and we're proud to offer these quality vehicles on all our tours.

As the world began to travel again in 2022, we at Tröll saw it as the perfect opportunity to take another giant leap for our clients and partners. Our relentless pursuit of quality and fun experiences led us to purchase three strategically located hotels. These will be used for our multi-day tours, ensuring our logistics are finely tuned as a violin in the Icelandic Philharmonic. This was a logical step for us, as we were already handling all other aspects of the multi-day tours we offer.

The future is as bright as the Northern Lights, and we have some very exciting things on the horizon. Our goal of making tours fun, informative, and professional remains at the heart of every action we take!

As tourism continues to grow worldwide, we are acutely aware of our responsibility towards nature and the people who join our tours. Being mindful of the ever-changing social dynamics on this planet will help us continue to write the success story of Tröll.
